Businesses are searching for ways to reduce their impact on the environment and with most organisations' vehicles are a big part of the discussion, but what do you need to consider?
Vehicles are intertwined in a business and can impact various departments and people across the company. When assessing the potential to move to a low or zero emission fleet there are many decisions and factors that need to be addressed to ensure a successful outcome. Here are a few points to consider when the discussion arises.
When assessing the viability of your fleet to transition to zero emissions, firstly you need to review your existing vehicles. The breakdown of the types of vehicles is important to allow you to assess suitable replacement vehicles. Does your fleet consist of similar vehicle types such as utes, or do you currently have a mix of vehicles, or even fit for purpose transport? Each vehicle type will require a different transition plan and determine how quickly they can be replaced. Whilst there are a growing number of low emission vehicles in the market, there are still no viable replacements for some types of vehicles.
The next point to consider is the usage of your fleet. Review how your team are using the vehicles, where they are driving to and where your offices are located. Importantly this will also assist with a recommendation of the type of low emission technology to suit your business. If your vehicles are being driven in rural conditions with little or no access to charging stations, hybrids might be the correct solution. Where staff are traversing metro areas and between office sites where charging stations can be installed, electric vehicles could be the right direction for you.

The cost impact is also a big part of the discussion. Shifting to a zero emission fleet could be a costly exercise, depending on the types of vehicles, the usage and your business requirements. You'll need to review the cost of not only the vehicle assets, but also if you're entitled to any Government discounts, internal policy development and any loss of staff efficiency. Remember to include your time in this assessment, as complex fleets can take hours of valuable time to review, research and plan.
The roll out strategy is the final point is to cover off. Firstly, you'll need to consider if you want to introduce all the low emission vehicles at once, or if you're after a staged approach. There are many factors that may impact this including if your existing vehicles are nearing the end of lease term or your company emission reduction goals. Either way each approach has its pros and cons and it will need to be specific plan to suit your needs and that of your business.
